The same cone crusher is offered with several cavity types. Choosing the right one matters more than the headline capacity

A cone crusher is sold with a choice of cavities, and the choice is decided by the feed, not by the tonnage wanted. A coarse cavity has a wider opening and a longer parallel zone, so it accepts a coarser feed and produces a coarser product. A fine cavity is shorter and tighter, which suits a feed that has already been reduced but produces a finer, more tightly graded result. Both may be listed with the same nominal capacity, which is exactly why the capacity figure alone cannot be used to choose between them.
The feed grading is the constraint. A cavity that is fed material it was not designed for will either choke, because the chamber cannot swallow the lumps fast enough, or run starved, because the material passes without being worked. Both cases waste the machine, one by stopping it and the other by not using it. The second constraint is the closed-side setting: it defines the top size of the product, and it has a practical minimum below which the chamber starts to work against itself, raising circulating load and wear without improving the output.
Reduction ratio is the trade being made. Asking a cone stage for a very large reduction in one pass pushes the chamber, the liners and the drive harder than spreading that reduction over two stages. On hard abrasive rock, the second approach usually wins on cost per tonne even though it needs more equipment, because liners are consumed by the work done, not by the tonnage passed. That is the real comparison to make: not which machine has the larger number in the table, but which arrangement produces the required tonnage at the required size for the least cost over a year of operation.
