An impact crusher breaks rock by impact rather than by squeezing. Feed enters through a large opening and is struck by blow bars mounted on a high-speed rotor; the broken pieces are thrown against the impact plates and broken again before leaving through the discharge opening. This second, free-impact stage is what gives the machine its characteristic product: the particles come out cubical and free from tension cracks, with a good shape that suits sand and gravel aggregate.
The mechanism also explains the main setting. The discharge size and the shape of the product are controlled by the gap between the impact frame and the rotor frame, so the same machine can be trimmed for different grading requirements without changing parts. The blow bars are made of high-chromium material that resists impact and abrasion. A jacking device opens the rear frame for quick part replacement, and the rotor runs on a keyless taper-lock connection that is simple to service.
The trade-off is material. Because the rock is broken by impact, the machine is happiest with soft and medium-hard, low-abrasion feed, such as limestone and recycled concrete. Hard, highly abrasive rock wears the blow bars quickly and raises the cost per tonne, so for that duty a cone crusher such as the DHP multi cylinder hydraulic cone crusher or the DCS DCH single cylinder hydraulic cone crusher is usually the better reduction tool, with the impact machine kept for shaping.
