Choosing the Right Small Cone Crusher for Modern Crushing Applications

A small cone crusher is chosen by feed size, chamber type and closed-side setting rather than by capacity alone

A cone crusher reduces rock by squeezing it between a gyrating mantle and a fixed bowl liner, so it works well on hard, abrasive material where an impact machine would wear out quickly. The small units are used for tertiary and fine crushing, and as the secondary stage in compact plants and manufactured-sand circuits. Their attraction is a controlled, consistent product.

Selection starts with the feed. The maximum feed size the chamber can accept, the closed-side setting that gives the target product, and the reduction ratio the circuit needs are read together. A chamber set for coarse work will not make a fine product, and a fine chamber fed with oversize will not run. The DCS DCH single cylinder hydraulic cone crusher, for example, is supplied with a range of chambers from extra-coarse to extra-fine, so the same frame can be matched to different duties.

The type of machine matters as much as the size. A single-cylinder unit is mechanically simpler and easy to protect against tramp metal through its hydraulic release. A multi-cylinder machine such as the DHP multi cylinder hydraulic cone crusher offers more combinations of stroke and chamber, which helps where the product grading is tight or the capacity is high. A compound machine such as the DMC Compound Cone Crusher sits below them on cost and is often used in smaller plants.

Beyond the crusher, the choice has to fit the plant. A small cone is commonly mounted on a mobile cone crushing station where the whole unit has to travel, and it needs a YK vibrating screen that can take its output and a feed arrangement that prevents the chamber from running empty or choked.
